Beastie Boys by Spike Jonze Book

The first photography book to be published by Academy Award-winning director and photographer Spike Jonze. It will appeal to any fan of the Beastie Boys and golden era hip-hop, but also photography and Spike Jonze's own audience.

Spike Jonze and the Beastie Boys first met in Los Angeles in 1991 when Jonze wanted to photograph the band for the cover of Dirt magazine. A bond was formed between the three MCs and the young photographer that has spanned their entire careers.

Nearly thirty years later - coinciding with the release of the new documentary Beastie Boys Story on Apple+ - this book brings together for the first time more than two hundred personal photos of Spike Jonze from his time with the group. Edited and featuring an afterword by Jonze, and with new writing by Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz himself, this book is an intimate look at the greatest band of the hip-hop generation in its truest sense, as only a close friend could could see them - from performing live on stage to writing together in Mike's apartment; from dressing up for a video to dressing up as old men on the basketball court; from recording music in the studio to goofing around on the streets of New York.

From the music video for "Sabotage" to the cover of the album "Sounds of Science," Spike Jonze is responsible for some of the band's most iconic images ever taken. But here the emphasis is on the raw, the unexpected and the real - just pictures of friends enjoying doing things together.

Spike Jonze is an award-winning American film director, photographer and author. He won Academy Awards for Best Director (Being John Malkovich, 2000) and Best Original Screenplay (Her, 2013), as well as a Grammy Award for Best Music Video (Weapon of Choice, 2002). He has written, directed or produced ten feature films, more than twenty documentaries and short films, several television shows and dozens of BMX, skateboarding and music videos. He is currently the creative director of Vice Media and its television channel Viceland. He lives in Los Angeles and New York.
